Sambar and Masala Dosa or Idli go hand in hand but Sambar is also enjoyed on its own. Sambar is an aromatic and flavourful south Indian lentil soup made with vegetables, lentils and spices.

Dal
- 1 cup Toor Dal
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 3 cups water
Vegetable Soup
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 carrot, peeled and diced
- 8 drumsticks
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 medium tomato, diced
- 3 cups water
- 2 tbsp Sambar powder homemade
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp Red Chili powder (Optional)
- 2 tbsp Tamarind Paste
Tadka/Tempering (Optional)
- 1 tbsp ghee or oil
- 1 tsp black mustard seeds
- 10 curry leaves (fresh)
Utensils

Step 1
Add the ingredients for the dal to a large pot over medium high heat. Simmer until Dal is cooked. This will take 30 – 40 minutes.

Add oil, carrots, drumsticks and salt to blender and select saute.

Add the remaining ingredients and select chunky.

Pour into the cooked Daal and mix throughly.

Tadka (Optional)
Warm oil in a pan. One hot, add the mustard seeds and curry leaves. Once the mustard seeds being to pop, pour the oil over the soup.
